So yes, we survived the onslaught of past weekend, opened up by highly impressive performances by nsi. (note : the set was entirely recorded, except the first 8 minutes - thx Yves! - so let’s hope this ends up on the internet in one form or another…) and the gentile guys from Sheffield, SND. The entire Substance crew was impressed how well the night went, bringing smiles to their faces, even at 6 in the morning, while some of us were crashing, physically. The life of an organiser. There’s nothing romantic about it, so take it or leave it.

As last year, the first musical notes on saturday were brought forward by none-other than our very own resident dj Special K. One might ponder what’s so special about this particular, egnimatic ‘K’ persona. Well, nothing much really… He’s as common, except for his wild hairstyle, as you and me, and he takes his job with ease, and an immense amount of concentration at the same time, whilst not losing touch with his audience for one nano-second. Talented & incredibly gifted, he’s one to look out for in the future!

More near than the far future, K paved the path for Bruno Pronsato, who stood up and delivered what he does best, simple, yet effective dancefloor material with enough diversity to keep the listener/dancing crowd in a state of daze & awe. Job well done, Steven!

As the man who stood up, took the decks, bringing what none of us could ever imagine, even in our wildest imaginations… Those in the know of Marcel Fengler’s Mnml Sggs mix, getting praised reviews all over the net, already had a small peek of what to expect, but Fengler, flying in on time, thanks to swift airlines, and our swift all-round driver Evad, shredded the place to pieces, at one particular moment during the night taking it very literally… No words can express it, to be honest… Quoting Marcel, mailing me the day after : ‘pure dope‘. Looking back, two days to cherish. Many thanks, love and gratitude to all artists, volunteers, people who beared with us during months, enduring patience and time… you’re all in our hearts.

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away… Yes, listening to the Beatles (imagine…) at the Vooruit backstage, setting up stage for day 2, and closing day, of the Resonance Ghent festival, edition 2010. Steven Ford, nom d’artiste Bruno Pronsato has entered the building, and Marcel Fengler has yet to catch a flight, outbound from Stockholm, where he delivered an amazing (so we heard) dj-set yesterday at the Skyddsrummet night. Things look promising! Tickets still available at a Fnac store near you, and many more addresses…

Opening up for them & sharing a common love for Cluster’s Grosses Wasser LP, Tobias Freund & Max Loderbauer (nsi.) delivered an amazing, fully improvised set of tension-full electronics, reminissing the best of German 70’s avant-garde (think minimalist Cluster, Harmonia, Roedelius…) combined with contemporary minimalistic techno. Fully recorded, let’s hope this live-set will see it’s way on the internet in any form…

Followed by SND, who brought the best in abstract cut-ups, largely based on their most recent release ‘Atavism‘ (Raster Noton - 2009), 100 % digital warmth washing over an intrigued audience in waves. It’s funk and 2-step combined, but not as a general audience knows it.

In the meantime, downstairs at the Concerthall, deejays Mate & Fudge of Ghent’s very own After12 collective, took opening hours for an exclusive night of bass-heavy music, that we can hardly call ‘dubstep’ anymore, entitled SUBSTANCE. The dubstep form has incredibly evolved over the course of the last year, constantly shifting, creating new hybrid forms, proven by absolute highlight of the night Slugabed, bringing an inspired Serato set (even with an incredible hangover - get well soon, Craig!), right after Paul Spymania, who luckily took along some ragga 7-inches along with him from home. Good choice, surprising, and most excellent. Designated by BBC Radio 1 bassqueen Mary Anne Hobbs ‘one to keep an eye on’, Untold hit the audience with subtle, compact basslines and clean percussion, his trademark sound, while Paul Rose, a.k.a. Scuba brought the 500+ attendees what they came for, streamlined quality, in the very same line as his just-released Substance mix album, released only a few weeks ago on Ostgut Ton. 4:30 am, and time for 2562. His far-from-typical sound, drenched in atmospherics, with lots of attention for the use of time and space, combined with classic Detroit-ish, influenced techno kept the audience shouting for more… Sadly, 6 am, and time to close the venue down, getting ready for the following day, here and now.

In five days time, the clock will strike once more. Coming Friday, March 5th, the pinnacle of months of preparation will see the light, living towards in excitement and all the more nervosity of, luckely, things going as planned, and, sadly, things not turning out the way they were planned. But let’s not look back in sadness, and look towards the coming weekend, an audiovisual feast of many continiously evolving electronic artforms : Resonance Ghent 2010.

Surely if you’ve been following this blog lately, you’re already up-to-date with what Resonance has to offer this year : performances by the Berlin duo nsi., and a brand new mathematical, yet soulful audiovisual performance by SND. Enough trembling with a bass heavy night, courtesy Sub:Stance (in coöperation with After 12 & Democrazy), starring live- & dj-sets by Scuba, Untold, Slugabed (new, exciting Planet Mu signing - check his H*O*T ep here), 2562, Paul Spymania & After 12 dj’s Mate & Fudge. And closing off we do in proper style with the man who took opening honours last year, Special K, our very own Resonance resident, followed by an exclusive live performance by Steven Ford aka Bruno Pronsato, and a 3-hour dj-set by none other than Berghain resident dj Marcel Fengler. Don’t tell us we didn’t do our utter best…

Far from a facile, standard dj-tool, one in a couple of hundreds, Berlin-based producer Bruno Pronsato’s second full length album ‘Why Can’t We Be Like Us‘ (Hello Repeat, 2008) grabbed me by the ears, and didn’t let go ever since that dusky drive in the car a while ago…

As Half Hawaii, with studiopartner Pantytec, and as a solo artist Pronsato absolutely defies categorization. Of course, there are certain elements in his work which see resemblance with fellow dance-producers such as Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano or DandyJack, not unexpectedly or surprisingly all having released on the Perlon label, which focuses in general on percussive elements , and non-standard use of samples & used source material quite often…, but with Pronsato it isn’t all about the ‘dance’. Clocking off at a impressive 38 minutes, Pronsato’s latest work “The Make Up, The Break Up“, released on his newborn label TheSongSays is easily to be named exceptional, never sinking in, constantly evolving. Call it progtechno if you like. Here’s what the good folks at ResidentAdvisor have to say about it in a well-deserved 5-star review.

Walking down the street, whistling, you might find yourself in case of violation… The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP in short, a performance rights body that licenses copyrighted works for non-dramatic public performances) believes it’s not entirely OK for little campers to sing “Happy Birthday” and/or “Row, Row, Row” around the campfire for free… Now add personal use of mobile communication means to that..

Frankly, a clear reminder of certain recent actions of ASCAP’s Belgian counterpart SABAM, who’ve led the media headlines recently with an outlandish claim towards private daycare centres, eventually resulting in more of the same. Rules and regulations, in all of its absurdity.

Luckily, less of the same landing on my lap recently, via a professionally torn-out newspaper article, courtesy of the steady hands of one of my Resonance collegues (thx Jan). Joining cities as Bologna, Sevilla and Glasgow on a select list, Ghent has been recognised by UNESCO as ‘City Of Music‘. Here’s what was officially published on the 11th of June: “The city of Ghent was foremost acknowledged for its reputation as a well-established centre for music with a rich tradition and inclusive approach to culture. The city possesses a complete infrastructure of creative and performing activities, with an impressive number of concert halls, education facilities and research centres. There is a solid support given to a variety of music genres, through a wide range of festivals and organisations. In addition, training and research activities are considered of core importance to the city with diverse education possibilities for local young artists, enabling them to develop their interest and career in the music field…”

Taking in the last sentence, i had to think of a set of tracks that have been sent my way shortly. Simon Halsberghe, going through blog- & Soundcloud-life as Simon Hold (one half of dj duo Pitch & Hold, one of my biggest surprises at last year’s Ten Days Off festival, playing a unmistakable, undeniable brilliant track such as this when least expected…) has been making a widening variety of electronic music in the past few years, ending up recently in 3 compositions that fairly impressed me, and would not feel out of place in a dark, cavernous environment, say 8 A.M. in the morning… Listen for yourself here.

“Keep it going, guys…”

One doesn’t necessarily need any more encouragement, especially coming from this grand man, to snap out of immensly busy workingweeks - yeah, the concept paying my rent, bills and plenty more useful & enjoyable things, luckily - and kick in the door that was unopened for far too long, once more brought to my already-existing attention by the gentle folks of OneDotOnly, at the usual sundaynoon full-halt-coffee-and-bubbles stop, that something, even the slightest thing, had to be done…  To make a long story short : hello! and glad to be back.. No, seriously.

That was the past & present, here’s a narrow view for the future. Next wednesday - that’s in two days time, yes.. - sees the first ‘official’ (*cough*), brand new Resonance 2010 meeting. Can’t say much for now, since, well… there’s not much to say really… Names in our heads, ideas rolling out of our broadshaped minds and noted, talked and discussed about. You’ll hear about it here first.

Set-up last month at the Brussels-based Time To Express studio by couleur-très-locale Peter Van Hoesen & Yves De Mey, TimeCast (notice the gentle voice at start.. Susanne..?) sees a variety of artists and friends related to T2x being invited to contribute a special DJ set, focusing on a particular aspect of electronic music.

Last month Yves De Mey (Eavesdropper / Sendai) took opening honours and brought a wide-range, wonderful selection of 17 tracks “straight from the daily life..”, while in this month of May producer, writer, blogger & what-not Philip Sherburne delivers a 95-minutes long mix “teasing out lines that I heard crisscrossing through different tracks—certain rhythms, tones and moods that seemed to be passed from one record to the next… playing music that wouldn’t normally find a home in a club context…“. Upcoming you’ll find talents such as Sensu, Adriaan Vankeerbergen (Nyckelpiga), Peter Van Hoesen and Franco Cangelli amongst many others doing exactly what they do best : variety & quality leading to a sense of intrigue and general aural pleasure.

Winter has (officially) passed, spring has come, and all things come to a good end. Or beginning. Depends what one’s view on things is. First of all, an enormous ‘thank you’ to all people involved in the succesfull ResonanceGhent 2009 festival, including all artists, collegues, supporters & volunteers. So, what’s next. Not much to tell at the moment, besides some ideas we’re developing as i type. Our goal is to offer some minor-scale - whether in coöp with other like-minded promotors/organisations or not - events during the year until the clock strikes twelve again, and a larger, multiple-day festival is presented once again over the course of the new year.

Also note the two-weekly residency at Bar Limonada where dj’s such as Special K (we hope to upload his intriguing opening dj-set of Day 2 sometime soon with his permission)  & 0106 play out the best in contemporary electronic music..

Resonancefestival – Gent – 1/3 – Dag 3

‘Say Hello And Wave Goodbye’, mensen met een fascinatie voor de wansmaak weten dat het een überstinker is van de hand van Soft Cell. Anderen leven gelukkig in het ongewisse en waren present op dag drie van Resonance. Het festival ruilde zijn vaste stek in de Vooruit in voor de Limonade, zonder twijfel één van Gentse meest charmante cafés/clubs. Honderd twintig zielen waren present op de laatste festivalavond wat het plakkaat ‘Sold Out’ opleverde. Terecht, want op de affiche stonden twee topnamen geprogrammeerd. Andreas Tilliander opende de avond onder zijn alter ego Mokira. Volgende maand komt op het Typelabel zijn nieuwe plaat ‘Persona’ uit. Saillant detail, de plaat viel twee weken geleden al bij ons in de bus, Tilliander had vrijdag pas een exemplaar weten te bemachtigen, nadat hij had opgemerkt dat zijn plaat al als fileshare op het web te vinden was. Tilliander leverde een klassieke set af, openen met een diepe soundscape, subtiel dubby beats introduceren en op het eind aansluiting zoeken met de dansvloer, maar toch gevoelig afstand houden. Het eerste gedeelte klonk als goede Tim Hecker, de afsluiter rook naar singelversie van de ambienthouseklassieker ‘Towers Of Dub’ van The Orb, geen slechte referentie overigens. Tilliander heeft klasse en overtuigde moeiteloos. Enig minpunt was de middelmatige klank, in vergelijking met de degelijke luidsprekers in de Vooruit leek het soundsystem in de Limonade wel erg mager. En toen kwam, zag en overwin Deep Chord. Het duo uit Detroit/Chigaco leverde twee jaar terug met ‘The Coldest Season’ een unieke plaat af en was mee verantwoordelijke voor de heropleving van de dubtechno, het genre dat in de vroege jaren 1990 een hoge vlucht nam met baanbrekend plaatwerk op Basic Channel en Chain Reaction. Het optreden van het duo was een one-off show (ingevlogen op zondag en maandag al weer teruggevlogen) en hun eerste optreden op Belgische bodem. Slechts één uur voor het optreden werd het voor het duo duidelijk dat ze gevraagd werden om een ambientset te spelen, de wankele communicatie met hun management was de oorzaak van dit euvel. Wie Deep Chord op de laatste editie van het Spaanse Sonarfestival aan het werk zag, weet dat de groep live een dubbeltje op zijn kant is. In Barcelona leverde men een snoeiharde, inspiratieloze technoset af. In Gent kregen we de groep te horen zoals we ze kennen van ‘The Coldest Season’ maar dan net een versnelling hoger. Wat mij persoonlijk zo intrigeert aan minimale dub is de kracht van de herhaling, altijd het zelfde monotone ritme - tien minuten ver, en de hartslag van alle aanwezigen liep synchroon met de beats - dat door subtiele, kleine wijzigingen muteert en onverwachte terreinen verkent.  Rod Modell en Steve Hitchell werkten zich uit de naad en wisten het tempo strak en open te houden. Afwezigen hebben vaak ongelijk, Deep Chord bracht één van de beste concerten van de laatste tien jaar. Een excellente afsluiter van het festival. Aftellen tot de editie 2010. Resonancefestival – Gent – 28/2 – Dag 2

Is het een goed idee om iemand met een jarenlange sluimerende cronische vermoeidheid de nacht in te jagen. Het antwoord is nee en het werd op het Resonancefestival helaas opnieuw bewezen. We haakten voortijdig af, ondanks ons voornemen om Peter Van Hoesen aan het werk te zien. De bezieler van het Fotonlabel maakt een heuse opmars, maar stond als uitsmijter van dienst op affiche. We waren er als de kippen bij - erg vroeg zo bleek - om de avond te openen. Reden van ons vroege bezoek was een interviewafspraak met Mark Stewart (niet de cultheld die u kent van Mark Stewart & The Maffia, maar een cultheld in wording die om alle onduidelijkheid te vermijden vaak ‘de andere Mark Stewart’ wordt genoemd). Ons vroege verschijning gaf ons wel de kans om het grootste gedeelte van residentdeejay Special K mee te pikken. Zijn eerste grote deejayset zo bleek later. Special K loste de hoge verwachtingen moeiteloos in en leverde een vloeiende mix af die bol stond van avontuurlijke minimaal, house en dubtechno – en eventjes zelf een verloren gelopen trompet, heerlijke moment vonden we dat – en net dat tikkeltje meer had. Special K is een naam om te onthouden, nieuw en aanstormend talent, het handelsmerk van het Resonancefestival. Move D en Benjamin Brunn zijn ondanks hun jonge leeftijd veteranen van de minimal techno. In Gent brachten ze een liveoptreden waarin ze hun typische sound – kristalheldere beats verpakt in een loepzuivere en avontuurlijke verhaal – op de spits dreven. Zo stoïcijns als zo op het podium stonden, zo intens was hun concert. Tussen twee bedrijven in konden we Mark Stewart (Claro Intelecto) en zijn compagnon de route Andy Stott spreken. Over het kanaal behoren de heren, samen met labelgenoten Pendle Coven, tot de lichting nieuwe helden. Beiden resideren ze op het uitmuntende label Modern Love (waar ook Deep Chord hun debuutplaat en instantklassier  ‘The Coldest Season’ op uitbracht). Hun optreden in Hun Hun     sdfsdf  Gent was uniek in vele opzichten, het eerste optreden van Claro Intelecto op Belgische bodem (het tweede voor Andy Stott die eerder al in het Leuvense Stuk concerteerde) en vooral een zeldzaam duoconcert. 2:30 u leek ons echter hopeloos laat. We vonden de uitgang en stoven richting huiswaarts. Waren nog gepland: een deejayset van Efdemin, ondanks als headliner aangekondigd voor ons persoonlijk de minst interessante naam van de affiche. Vergiste de man zich niet van stad? Eén van zijn bekendste nummers heet immers ‘Bruxelles’ (op Dail). Zoals eerder gezegd was het Peter Van Hoesen die als laatste het podium op mocht (‘het harde werk om mee af te sluiten’, zoals hij zelf zegde). Van Hoesen maakte naam met het Fotonlabel, een reeks ijzersterke installaties, maar keert met een resem platen onder zijn eigen naam terug naar zijn roots. In Engeland en Duitsland is onze landgenoot hot. De Britse internetwinkel en referentiegids heeft zijn platen steevast een hoge waardering mee. Het is met spijt in het hart dat we dit gemist hebben. Edoch, is dit aardse leven niet steevast een verhaal van gemiste kansen. Op naar dag drie, we beloven wakker te blijven. Nu u nog. Peter Deschamps, Gonzo Circus, www.gonzocircus.com

Resonancefestival – Gent – 27/02/09 – Dag 1

Waren het vroege lentekriebels of misschien vooral de uitmuntende affiche die heel wat volk naar de Gentse Vooruit lokte, feit is dat de eerste avond van het Resonancefestival ongeveer driehonderd muziekliefhebbers op de been bracht. Een opsteker voor de organisatie die met deze tweede editie opnieuw toont de vinger aan de pols te houden. Meer nog dan eender welk ander elektronisch festival slaagt men erin om een mooi evenwicht te vinden tussen opkomend en beloftevol talent en gevestigde waarden. Opener van deze eerste avond was Rutger Zuydervelt ofte Machinefabriek. Toegegeven, een twijfelgeval als het gaat over beloftevol of opkomend. De Nederlander slaagde er op enkele jaren in om en trouwe schare fans te verzamelen en houdt er een verschroeiend releasetempo op na. Recent verscheen de 7inch single ‘Mooie Woorden’, opnieuw een onwaarschijnlijk mooi hebbeding dat zowel auditief als visueel erg aantrekkelijk is. We moeten bekennen dat we slechts flarden van de man zijn optreden, de eerste tien minuten en de laatste vijf minuten van wat een bezwerende finale heet, hebben we meegepikt. De reden was dat onze interviewafspraak met Carsten Nicolai werd eerst verplaatst en liep vervolgens aardig uit. Maar de flarden die we konden opvangen, de traag opgebouwde soundscapes en een bijzonder heftige afsluiter bewezen – opnieuw – de man zijn uitzonderlijk talent. Ook visueel is Machinefabriek erg innemend. Waar de meeste elektronische artiesten zich verschuilen achter een labtop zat Zuydervelt met analoge apparatuur te jongleren. Zuydervelt is een rasartiest, een wetenswaardigheid die hij vrijdag opnieuw met verve onderstreepte. Uit zijn hele oeuvre vinden wij ‘Dauw’ (op het Duitse Dekorder) zijn beste plaat tot op heden. Dat hij dit vrijdagavond zelf bevestigde vinden we op een vreemde manier een hele geruststelling. De tijd dat Yves De Mey debuteerde met subtiele drum ’n bass lijkt lichtjaren achter ons te liggen. De Mey, geboren in Mechelen maar al jaren lang een inwoner van Brussel, legde een kronkelig parcours af. De melomane muziekliefhebber zocht en vond aansluiting met de wereld van de klassieke muziek (een uitmuntende samenwerking met cellospeler Alex Waterman) en soundscapes (zijn project met Audiostore mag tot het beste Belgische elektronische werk worden gerekend). Op Resonance bracht De Mey de première van ‘Lichtung’, de plaat die hij onder eigen naam binnenkort uitbrengt op Line, het sublabel van 12K. 12K is het label van De New-Yorker Taylor Deupree. De man bouwde een reputatie op als soundscape-artiest en wist zijn label in korte tijd een al even gedegen reputatie mee te geven. Dat De Mey op Line debuteert is vooral een bevestiging en belangrijke waardering. Al moeten we eerlijkheidshalve toegeven dat het concert zelf wat dunnetjes uitviel. De Mey leverde een paar fraaie stukken af, maar slaagde er niet in om zijn sessie tot een coherent geheel te kneden. Vaak was het zoeken naar een schaars hoogtepunt en waren zijn bedoelingen niet altijd even duidelijk. De Mey mist duidelijk nog wat concertervaring en verkeert nog te veel in een zoekende fase. Wat niet belet dat we reikhalzend uitkijken naar de release van ‘Lichtung’. Afsluiter en headliner van de avond was Carsten Nicolai. De peetvader de minimale, mathematische uitgepuurde posttechno viert dit jaar het tienjarig bestaan van zijn Raster-Notonlabel en heeft een goede band met Gent. Enkele jaren terug stonden een paar van zijn installaties in het Smak. Net voor zijn optreden hadden we een lang gesprek met de man. We noteerden quotes als ‘ik houd van Britney Spears of althans van de mensen die haar muziek maken’ en ‘de eerste plaat van Destiny’s Child is een klassieker’ en het schaamrood stond hem op de wangen toen hij het openingsnummer uit ‘Carmen’ van Bizet niet herkende. De man bracht recent ‘Xerrox Vol.2’ uit maar liet de plaat links liggen en bracht een strakke en korte set. Knallende beats en flarden noise waren de receptuur van de avond. Nicolai loste de hoge verwachtingen moeiteloos in en bracht een energieopstoot. Het is uitkijken naar dag van Resonance. Slagen Peter Van Hoesen, Andy Stott en Claro Intelecto in hun opdracht.
